“We love the farming lifestyle,” says Hilda when discussing her family’s decision to emigrate from Belgium in 1999. The prospects of greater land availability in Canada would allow them to engage in a larger pork production business. They chose the Temiskaming district in northern Ontario because its distance from other pig farms greatly minimized the risk of disease. As well, the 1100 acre spread enabled the cultivation of the barley, oats, corn, beans and canola that would provide farm-grown feed for the pigs who remain on-site from farrow to finish. Hilda notes that in spite of the challenges of managing 220 sows, there is great joy in being your own boss on a family farm.
