ON Organic Newsletter July 2011

We have had a mix of crop successes this year with uneven and late planted crops on many farms. Compaction is common. Weeds are serious issues for many farms. In some crops there are disease issues. In most cases we can blame it on the spring weather. Remember to scout (and walk) your crops regularly to identify problems early. Once an issue is identified, determine the best steps to avoid that problem in future years and to determine any new strategies that may still be effective this year.

This month’s issue is longer than normal but there is just so much good information out there. Thanks to the contributing authors and to OCO and EFAO and others who pass it on to other colleagues in the organic sector. We always appreciate your comments on how to improve the newsletter.

ON Organic Newsletter March 2011

Spring is here, or almost. March is always an interesting time with warm sunny days and then another blast of winter. Get the equipment ready. Organize your final field plans. Get the certification applications in to your CB, the deadline is approaching. Make sure the seed is delivered on time. If it is an early spring we could be planting early crops within a few weeks. A new opportunity to have a successful farming season is upon us – Good Luck!

ON Organic February 2011

As we move into a new season it is good to look around at the various issues in our sector. Grain prices and GMO alfalfa have become topics so I have included some information on these topics. Agricorp is introducing a new Production Insurance program for corn in 2011 so we have some information that program. We have also included some info on various courses and conferences that are happening.
